Devika River: The Soul of Udhampur

Udhampur is a famous city notorious for the sacred Devika River. The Devika River in Udhampur is also popular with the name Devak Nagri. Locals lovingly call it Depka. The river is often referred to as the younger sister of the holy Ganges. A prominent Shiva statue is also located at Devika Ghat, standing at a height of 71 feet.

Historical Importance

The Nilmat Purana, written in the seventh century by Nela Muni, mentions the Devika River in Udhampur. It states that the river is a form of Goddess Parvati. She appeared to bless the people of Mader Desha, the area between the Ravi and Chenab rivers. It is believed that this River in Udhampur appeared on Shivratri. Lord Shiva himself resides along the sacred River in the form of Shiv Lingas at eight sacred spots.

Spiritual Significance

The Devi Mahatmya mentions that no rituals or chants are required to receive spiritual blessings. Just touching the river’s water or bathing in it is enough to gain spiritual merit. Water can be found by digging just a foot into the sand. Cremation on the sands of the Devika River in Udhampur is believed to be as sacred as cremation in Kashi, on the banks of the Ganges.

Sacred Sites Along the River

The banks of the river are lined with ancient temples known as the Devika Temples. These temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and other deities. The Devika Temples in Udhampur attract pilgrims, sages, and devotees, especially during Maha Shivratri and Amavasya.

Spiritual Practices

The Devika Temple complex in Udhampur is a center of powerful spiritual energy. Rituals like pind daan (ancestral offerings) are performed here, similar to those on the Ganges. Bathing in the Devika River in Udhampur is believed to purify the soul and wash away sins.
