Discover the Ancient Krimchi Temples in Udhampur

Krimchi is a small historical town in the Udhampur district of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It lies 12 km north of Udhampur on the Udhampur–Lander road and about 67 km from Jammu city. Two streams namely Birunala and Kiramchi, drain the area, which sits at an altitude of 730 meters.

A Cluster of Ancient Temples

The main attraction of Krimchi is the group of seven temples. These include five main temples and two small shrines. The Krimchi temples stand on a raised terrace beside the Birunala stream. Historians consider these structures among the oldest surviving temples in Jammu and Kashmir. Built with remarkable stone architecture, the temples reflect early medieval design.

Myths, Legends, and History

According to local tradition, Krimchi once served as a halt on the Jammu and Kashmir route via Banihal. Legends link the site to the Mahabharata era, claiming that a contemporary of the Pandavas founded Krimchi. Another tradition claims that Krimchi was once the capital of Bhuti, a historical kingdom in Jammu.

Rule of the Bhutials

Diwan Narsingh Dass Nargis recorded that descendants of Raja Daya-Karan of Kashmir ruled this region for many years. Their dynasty was called the Bhutials. The last ruler, Himmat Singh, was defeated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Eventually, Raja Gulab Singh took control, and Bhuti became part of the Jammu Kingdom in 1834.
